  • Md. Reyad Ahmed A community disaster alarm system that uses your cellphone!

    Md. Reyad Ahmed

A community disaster alarm system that uses your cellphone!

Md. Reyad migrated from the Pabna district to Dhaka for work. His idea initially was to create a community alarm and warning system by tapping into the innumerable cellphone users of the Korail basti and areas around it. He is working in close consultation with the cellphone repair persons who have the best knowledge of the content watched by the community. They work as an informal information dissemination channel and media download nodes of the basti. Together, they will work on a community radio channel as an early warning system.

    AL ROMANA SANIA

Young architect proposes mud packs for tin roofs!

Sania is herself a young architecture student. She is trying to bring the traditional knowledge of mud construction, embedded in the villages, to the dense urban basti. Through an in-depth study of the construction practices and potential in Korail, she will be developing fire-proof, low cost bricks as a viable alternative to tin.

    Dr. MUSHTAQ AHMMED

It’s real cool under a vegetable plant!

How can nutritious vegetables also help keep a house cool? Dr. Mustaq is helping build on the idea of enterprising community members such as Mhd. Rafiq. He will be working on a simplistic method through which people in the basti would be able to grow plants themselves and reduce recyclable waste.

  • ZAMAN HOSSAIN ZICORenewable energy run Ventilation Systems to keep the doctors away!

    ZAMAN HOSSAIN ZICO

Renewable energy run Ventilation Systems to keep the doctors away!

Zico spent the early years of his childhood in Korail. Now an architect, he wanted to use his skills to contribute back to the area. Being well-versed with the issues of ventilation and heat that cause several illnesses there, he will be experimenting with ventilation systems such as small scale turbines run on renewable energy.

  • Arifur RahmanThe new community health model that begins with our old friend!

    Arifur Rahman

The new community health model that begins with our old friend!

Arifur developed his idea based on his experience of organising volunteer teams. Speaking with Kabir Khan, one of the pharmacists in Korail, he realised that the pharmacists play a vital role of first-level response. Korail has limited access to a budget-friendly health center or doctors and pharmacists fulfill this gap. He is building a scalable community health model with local youth volunteers and pharmacists.

  • MOHAMMED RAFIQThe coolest vegetable grower you ever met!

    MOHAMMED RAFIQ

The Coolest Veggie Grower you ever met!

For Mohammed Rafiq, cultivating Lau or Bottle Gourd was something he always did in his village. The creeper climbed and spread over the thatched roof of his village home and provided protection and food.In Korail, the roofs are of searing hot tin sheets and he did not know how to cultivate Lau in these conditions. There was hardly enough space to plant his feet, forget planting anything else. In congested, space-hungry Korail, cultivating Lau seemed a distant dream.

  • HOSHNIARA BEGUMA rental business that stays afloat with a water storage innovation!

    HOSHNIARA BEGUM

A rental business that stays afloat with a water storage innovation!

Growing up in Mymensingh— an area criss-crossed by various rivers and lush, green countryside— Hoshniara was not prepared to deal with extreme water scarcity when she and her husband moved to Korail. The sweltering, tiny tin shelters, made even more cramped with drums and buckets used to store water, did not make for good living. Cooking, eating, washing, cleaning — living would come to a standstill each time the drums ran empty.
